How to become a licensed life insurance agent

A step-by-step path into a career built on helping families protect their financial future ... licensing, exams, and getting appointed with carriers.

01 · THE OPPORTUNITY

Understand the role

A life insurance agent helps individuals and families choose policies that meet their financial and estate planning needs. As a licensed agent you guide clients through options such as term life, whole life, and universal life insurance. The life insurance industry offers a rewarding and stable career path for motivated people who want to make a real impact.

02 · GET LICENSED

Meet your state's requirements

To sell life insurance you must obtain a license in the state where you plan to do business. Requirements vary by state, but the core process follows the same four moves.

01Complete pre-licensing education
Most states require 20 to 40 hours of coursework from an approved education provider.
02Pass the state licensing exam
Covers insurance terms and concepts, policy types and riders, and state regulations and ethical practices.
03Submit an application and background check
File through your state insurance department or the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR).
04Receive your National Producer Number
Your NPN tracks your licenses and appointments across every state you work in.
03 · PROTECT YOURSELF

Get Errors and Omissions coverage

Most carriers require agents to carry Errors and Omissions (E and O) insurance to protect against professional liability claims. This coverage is essential before contracting with insurers, so line it up early in the process.

04 · START SELLING

Get appointed with carriers

To sell policies you must be appointed by one or more life insurance companies. The process involves submitting paperwork, verifying your license, and reviewing commission structures. Working with a top FMO like Brokers Alliance simplifies all of it ... we help you get contracted with top-rated carriers and streamline the appointment process so you can start writing business sooner.
